Daily Devotion: Jehovah Rapha

Image
In the  16th chapter of Exodus  we find a passage of scripture that gives us a great deal of insight into our Jehovah Rapha. This name of God is proclaimed to the children of Israel by God through Moses at Marah. The caption in my study Bible for this passage of Scripture says “Bitter Waters Made Sweet”. Let’s take a look at  Exodus 15:22-26  (NIV) and mine the treasures contained there: "Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah.) So the people grumbledagainst Moses, saying, 'What are we to drink?' Then Moses cried out to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There the LORD made a decree and a law for them, and there he tested them. He said, 'If you listen carefully to the voi

5 Myths About Being A Good Mom

Image
Meryl Beck of Ashburn, Virginia, is having one of those days every  mom  can relate to. "Put your toys away!" "Brush your teeth right now!" "Stop fighting!" She's done nothing but bark orders at her two sons from the moment they woke up, and she's had it. Finally, she snaps at them, "I don't like you very much right now!" The minute the words escape her lips, Meryl is consumed with guilt, calling herself a "bad mom." But is she? The idea that a "good mom"  always  feels positively toward her children, no matter how much they test her patience, is just one of the many myths of  motherhood , says psychologist Diane Sanford, PhD, health expert for the American Psychological Association. "Women tend to compare and measure themselves against unrealistic images and then feel they fall short." From ads that feature picture-perfect mothers, to bestselling books that promise a foolproof formula for raisin

Video: Stephen Curry's Game Winner

Image
OMG! At least watch the first 5 to 6 seconds of this video to see the reigning MVP Stephen Curry hit a game-winning  3-pointer in overtime from 32 feet away resulting in victory over Oklahoma city in yesterday's game. Indeed there is greatness in each and everyone of use, we just have to take the time to discover it, work  on it and  let it shine.  The bible said in Proverbs 22:29  "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? He shall stand before kings; he shall  not stand before mean men."

Sharon Elliott: Vision

Image
In  Acts 10 , we read of two men whose worlds were about to intersect. Cornelius was a God-fearing Gentile, a really nice guy, but also a centurion, a leader of the Italian Regiment who was in Caesarea to control it for the Roman empire. Peter was a Jew, a Christ-follower, and the head of the Jerusalem church, the group of new believers just after the resurrection. Both Cornelius and Peter saw visions. An angel appeared to Cornelius and told him to find a guy named Peter, send for him, and listen to what he has to say. Cornelius obeyed immediately. Peter saw a vision of a sheet filled with “…all kinds of four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air” ( Acts 10:12  NKJ). The Lord’s voice said, “Rise, Peter; kill and eat” ( Acts 10:13 ), but Peter refused saying he’d never eaten anything common or unclean. This vision repeated to Peter three times, each time with the Lord’s response, “What God has cleansed you must not call common” ( Acts 10:

Teaching Your Teens To Pray

Image
If I could get in a time machine and go back to teenaged Greg I'd tell him one thing...learn how to pray. Sadly, it took me about four decades to begin to truly discover the power of prayer. Once I did, it felt like for the majority of my life I'd been throwing dirt clods at Satan only to discover there was a bazooka in the closet. Now that I'm learning the power of prayer I can scream,  "Say hello to my little friend"  as I blast away at Satan's strongholds in my life, church, community and nation! I can worship God and praise him for who he is and what he has done! I can intercede at Jesus' side for both believers and unbelievers alike! Oh how I wish I would have learned the art and science of prayer as a teenager! Instead, I followed the model of many of my leaders who used prayer more like holy water to sanctify their white board plans. Instead it is a secret weapon to be aimed at the enemy of our souls. It is a largely untapped pipe

Jordan Smith: Winner of "The Voice" Same Competition He was Rejected From

Image
The Voice winner Jordan Smith who repeatedly reign on the top of the iTunes single chart, says  "I want to use my fame to glorify God." He said I don't want to use God's name to promote my position, but I will use what position I have to promote Him and His name." The singer who was rejected in 2014 during audition by the same competition (The Voice) which he is now the winner admitted: "It was difficult because it was something that I wanted very badly," I had this dream in my heart to be part of the show and I thought that I was meant to do it. I really thought for a long time, for a few years, that I was meant to do this. When Auditioned and didn't make it, it was a little devastating."  Upon deciding to audition for The Voice a second time, Smith made a prayerful decision about the attitude he will maintain throughout his music career. Now Smith said he sees that he wasn't ready the first time, and that his ye

Dr. Brown: Nike's Double Standard

Image
Although Manny Pacquiao quickly apologized for his remarks about homosexuals, Nike dropped him like a hot potato. In contrast, Nike  never dropped  Tiger Woods despite the revelations of his serial adulteries, even though those led to the destruction of his marriage and worldwide public shame. Why the double standard? Does Nike believe that it is far worse to make a passing, extremely  derogatory comment about homosexuals – one for which Manny quickly apologized and asked forgiveness – than to betray one's children and cheat on one's wife, sleeping with a bevy of different women over a period of years (including several porn stars)? Or could it be that, because Tiger is still worth more money, his transgressions are more forgivable? While appearing on a local Philippines TV station, Manny  said : "It's common sense. Do you see animals mating with the same sex? Animals are better because they can distinguish male from female. If men mate with men and women

Devotion - Fight On The Hidden Battlefield --and WIN

Image
1 Peter 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. Have you ever heard of the Valley of Elah? It's the valley near Bet Shemesh where David defeated Goliath, yet this historic battlefield is virtually untouched in Israel. During the rainy season a brook runs through the midst of the valley, however it dries up during the summer. This brook is very likely the one from which David chose his five smooth stones – one of which was used to kill Goliath. Yet, this historic place has no landmarks, no churches – people drive past it all the time unaware of it's biblical or historic significance. The present "invisibility" of this battlefield causes me to reflect on the fact that David's battle with Goliath was also won in an "invisible" place...the place of David's faith. Isn't it true, most of the battles we face are won or lost in the spiritual realm -- on a hidden battlefield where we wage war in

Bus Stop Buzz

Image
While waiting at the bus stop with my young granddaughter the other day, I learned a valuable lesson about following God's will. I have heard ministers and other Christians speak of God's will and how we need to follow God. They share how He has a purpose and plan for our lives. However, I am not sure I am following the correct plan. I can think of other Christians who are accomplishing great things for His kingdom. Even though I am praying for God's will to be done in my life, I find it hard to see how God is using me. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future ( Jeremiah 29:11 ). Somehow, for God's will to be accomplished, I envision great and important things happening. This is not my life, or so I thought. I work, pay bills, and occasionally write  an article on what God is doing in my life. But my desire is to serve, follow, and give Him the glory and honor for i
